Navigating Adverse Outcomes

First up in our series of virtual workshops is Navigating Adverse Outcomes.

What it’s about

How you communicate with a patient when something goes wrong is a major factor in determining if they make a complaint. Yet most doctors receive little or no formal training in how to communicate on what can be a difficult and stressful situation.

This small-group virtual workshop takes an in-depth look at communicating effectively with patients when adverse outcomes occur. It highlights the importance of recognising patient needs and expectations, examines how failing to address these can increase the risk of a patient taking further action, and equips you with techniques to help reduce the risk of complaints.

By attending you will:

  • Increase your knowledge of the research and perspectives around the patient and clinician experience of adverse outcomes
  • Examine personal attitudes that can affect a doctor’s response to an adverse outcome
  • Explore your basic ethical and legal obligations when discussing adverse outcomes with patients and their carers
  • Understand and be able to apply Medical Protection’s highly effective ‘ASSIST©’ model for handling adverse outcomes, enhancing your skills to communicate with patients when something has gone wrong
  • Reduce your risk of complaints or disciplinary action
