Looking Forward: The Future of Practice in Hong Kong

13 July 2017

Last month, over 400 delegates joined us at the Shangri-La Kowloon for the Hong Kong Medicolegal Conference 2017. Attendees, mostly members of Medical Protection, and expert speakers came from around the world  to focus on the future of practice in Hong Kong.

Delegates heard from a panel of expert speakers on a range of topics, including meeting the challenges of healthcare delivery in 21st century Hong Kong, the likely impacts of societal and regulatory change on professional practice, and the impact of technology on the doctor/patient relationship. Special thanks to Dr Hon Pierre Chan, Professor Lau Chak-Sing and Professor Samuel Kwok for their support in making the event such a success.

Allison Newell, MPS executive director of international, invited delegates to share their feedback on their professional needs and how MPS could help them, as well as highlighting our future strategy for Hong Kong. Howard Kew, executive director of finance and risk, presented on understanding indemnity risks and challenges. Both were on hand throughout the day, along with other MPS colleagues, for members and other stakeholders to meet and liaise with.

A fresh perspective on safety and reliability was shared by retired British Airways training captain Guy Hirst, which proved to be a popular section of the conference, as did Dr Suzy Jordache’s presentation, which gave help and advice for today’s clinicians to help them stay healthy and adjust their work-life balance.

Have your say

At the conference delegates were asked what most concerned them about practicing in the 21st century. Here’s what they had to say:

Other concerns included: 11% keeping up with developments in my specialty and 7% each for keeping up with technology, lack of time and none of the above.

Do you agree? What are your thoughts on some of these issues?
