If you have to move in order to advance your training as a doctor you may be able to claim up to £10,000 in relocation expenses. In most areas, this applies whether you are working full or part time. Better still, HMRC will allow up to £8,000 of relocation expenses to be exempt from income tax and National Insurance contributions.

If the relevant criteria are met, the costs eligible for reimbursement may include:

  • Costs incurred for searching for accommodation in a new area
  • Costs of purchasing a property including legal fees and stamp duty
  • Costs of selling a property including legal fees
  • Removals costs such as removal of furniture
  • Additional or excess travelling costs

If you must move to another part of the country and incur expenses, then we would recommend you ask your new employer about the process for making claims.

For more information we recommend the following websites:

England: Health Education England

Wales: All Wales Relocation

Northern Ireland: NIMDTA

In Scotland the policy can vary based on the NHS board involved. We suggest looking at the website of the specific board first.
