A Message from Dr. Rob Hendry, Chief Member Officer
At Medical Protection, we’re committed to providing healthcare professionals with comprehensive protection, expert support, and peace of mind at every stage of their career. We understand that switching indemnity providers can be a big decision, especially when you’re moving to Medical Protection’s occurrence-based indemnity from a claims-made insurer.
One of the most common concerns we hear is: “What happens to incidents from my past, and how do I avoid a gap in protection?”
That’s why I’m pleased to introduce our new Retroactive Reporting Benefits - specifically designed for members making the switch from a claims-made insurance provider.
What are Retroactive Reporting Benefits?
In a claims-made insurance model, you’re only protected if both the incident and the claim are reported while your policy is active. In contrast, occurrence-based indemnity, like that provided by Medical Protection, protects you for incidents that happen during your membership, no matter when a claim is made, even years later.
Also known as ‘nose cover’, Retroactive Reporting Benefits (RRBs) are necessary to ensure that when you switch from a claims-made provider to Medical Protection, you don’t lose the ability to seek support for past incidents that may only come to light after your new membership begins.
Your past, protected
So, when you become a Medical Protection member, RRBs ensure that your protection doesn’t just start from the day you join – it stretches back to protect for incidents that happened before your Medical Protection membership began.
This means that if you become aware of an issue or potential claim relating to your previous practice, while you were still with your claims-made insurer, you can report it to us and request our world-class support and assistance.
What’s included
- Protection for past incidents: You can report notifiable incidents and claims that happened during your previous claims-made coverage.
- An unlimited retroactive period: We can protect for incidents from as far back as you need, reflecting your prior time with a claims-made provider.
- Five years to report: From the day your occurrence-based membership commences, you’ll have five years to report any new incidents that arise from that period.
- A generous financial cap: We’ll provide protection for up to US$ 5 million in claims reported over the five-year Retroactive Reporting Benefit period.
- World-class expert support: As always, you’ll have access to the advice, guidance, and protection that Medical Protection is known for. It’s important to remember that RRBs operate on a claims-made basis. This means that as soon as you become aware of any adverse incident from your past, you must report it to us during the five-year RRB period to be eligible for assistance.
Seamless protection from day one
We know that moving from a claims-made insurer to an occurrence-based indemnifier like Medical Protection is not just a financial decision. It’s about trust, support, and security for your professional future.
Our Retroactive Reporting Benefits ensure you won’t have to leave your past unprotected when making the switch. From day one, you’ll have continuous, comprehensive protection, and the expert support you need, every step of the way.
