How to make the most of your membership and renew
We’re not just here in case things go wrong. With Medical Protection you have access to membership benefits and resources that can help stop problems from occurring in the first place. We treat all our members as individuals and by using more detailed information about your scope of practice we provide you with a tailored membership and subscription, giving you peace of mind that you have appropriate indemnity in place.
Following the introduction of clinical negligence schemes in England and Wales, the state now provides indemnity for clinical negligence claims related to the provision of NHS primary medical services. Medical Protection continues to provide comprehensive protection for circumstances not covered by the scheme, and the right to request indemnity for claims which are outside the scope of state indemnity if you have an appropriate Claims Protection membership for this work.
The right to request advice and legal representation for coroner's inquests/Fatal Accident Inquiries, disciplinary and regulatory proceedings, and criminal investigations related to your professional practice
The right to request indemnity for clinical negligence claims (not covered by NHS indemnity) and Good Samaritan acts worldwide
Access to a dedicated expert legal team which may include clinical negligence solicitors, medicolegal consultants, and professional case and claims managers
Medicolegal advice line including out of hours emergency support 24/7. Access to the advice line is unlimited, and the number of times you call has no impact on your subscription rate
Help responding to and resolving patient complaints
Expert support including preparing statements and responding to the media on your behalf
Workshops, online courses and webinars with accredited CPD to develop your communication and risk management skills
Access to online publications and case reports
Access to our confidential counselling service to support you through a stressful case or claim
Your guide to member benefits outlines the vast range of resources you can use to help manage your risk, receive expert help when you need it, and practise with confidence throughout your career.
Please take time to read the guide to your responsibilities as a member and examples of those circumstances in which we are unlikely to be able to help with a request for assistance.
When you’re working in an NHS hospital your clinical negligence indemnity is provided through an NHS scheme. But NHS indemnity does not cover doctors working in general practice in Northern Ireland. This means you will notice an increase in your subscription rate once you start your second year of training as this will include at least one GP post.
You can claim back any membership costs which exceed £48 (the rate you would be paying in a hospital post) from the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA).
You will need a reimbursement letter from us as evidence for your expenses claim with NIMDTA. Please contact Member Services to get a copy of this letter.
Subscriptions are reimbursed by NIMDTA in full, but you have the option of either paying Medical Protection in full or spreading your payment across ten monthly instalments at no extra cost.
It is important to check your details as any missing or inaccurate information could affect your right to request assistance and in some circumstances can result in your membership being cancelled.
