Membership for private practice consultants

As a consultant working in private practice you want to make sure you've got protection as unique as you are. At Medical Protection, we know better than anyone the ups and downs that doctors face today. Over 130 years ago, we were started by doctors for doctors. And that same doctor-to-doctor experience still sets us apart in supporting our members.

Unlike some other providers, our protection doesn’t stop when you retire or stop practising. You, your family and your estate have the right to request indemnity for future claims arising from any year during which you were a Medical Protection member.

Discretionary support

Our discretionary approach to providing assistance is not about saying no – it’s about having the flexibility to ask, ‘How can we help?

Discretion allows us to treat each case on its individual merit, providing flexibility for a wider range of situations, especially those with unforeseen or unusual circumstances.

With no financial caps on the indemnity we can provide, we have the versatility to assist in areas where other providers may be restricted by contractual terms and limits.

Unlike some other organisations, discretion allows us to assess claims and complaints when new issues and risks arise in healthcare and consider where we can support you. Our response for members during the COVID-19 crisis is a clear demonstration of that ability to adapt.

Our experienced medicolegal consultants and specialist solicitors can use their judgement and expertise to help you, without being restricted by small print, caps, or exclusion clauses.

Expert advice from an experienced team

Our medicolegal advice service is there to help with queries and medicolegal emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. With individuals who understand you and your specialty, whatever your question, problem or dilemma, our team of experts are only ever a phone call away.

Priced for your protection and never for our profit, members are at the heart of everything we do. We don’t have shareholders to pay, so every decision we make is to benefit our membership.

Our focus is on putting you first and providing protection that goes further. Our protection is not limited to patient claims, and our team are here to offer advice for any eventuality your career may face. You have the right to request assistance with personal conduct matters brought by the GMC.

GP trainees in Northern Ireland

When you’re working in an NHS hospital your clinical negligence indemnity is provided through an NHS scheme. But NHS indemnity does not cover doctors working in general practice in Northern Ireland. This means you will notice an increase in your subscription rate once you start your second year of training as this will include at least one GP post.

You can claim back any membership costs which exceed £48 (the rate you would be paying in a hospital post) from the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA).

You will need a reimbursement letter from us as evidence for your expenses claim with NIMDTA. Please contact Member Services to get a copy of this letter.

Subscriptions are reimbursed by NIMDTA in full, but you have the option of either paying Medical Protection in full or spreading your payment across ten monthly instalments at no extra cost.

It is important to check your details as any missing or inaccurate information could affect your right to request assistance and in some circumstances can result in your membership being cancelled.
