Ulundi Behrtel LLB BLC
Head of Delivery Services - South Africa

Ulundi obtained the BLC and LLB law degrees at the University of Pretoria. She also holds a Certificate in Medicine and Law (cum laude) from the University of South Africa, a Certificate in Legislative Drafting (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria, and a Post Graduate Diploma in International Research Ethics (cum laude) from the University of Cape Town.

Ulundi is the Head of Delivery Services - South Africa and leads the standalone team providing claims and cases administration services to Medical Protection from South Africa. She is a qualified attorney with three decades of experience in medical law and ethics, including the field of clinical negligence and insurance litigation.


Dr Graham Howarth MBChB, Dip Mid COG (SA), MMed (O&G), MPhil (Bioethics)
Medical South Africa Lead

Graham qualified as a doctor at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. He then went on to qualify as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at the same institute before completing his master’s degree in bioethics.

Prior to moving to the UK in 2003, Graham was an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Pretoria, and the founding head of the faculty’s Bioethics Department.

He now works as a full-time medicolegal consultant at Medical Protection and is the lead on medical services for South Africa.


Gill Talbot MB:BS MFFLM FFFLM
Medicolegal Consultant

Gill has almost 30 years of experience as a medicolegal consultant, having worked across the UK, Ireland and South Africa. In that time, she has been a trainer, team leader, project lead, governance advisor and complaints lead (South Africa), dealing with member concerns around the provision of service.

As a member of the Case Decision Team, Gill advises colleagues on difficult and challenging issues regarding case handling. She also provides a second opinion for claims made authority to assist decisions and is a company Complaints Champion for Medical Protection South Africa.

Medicolegal Consultant

Volker qualified as a doctor at the University of Pretoria in South Africa before going on to qualify as a specialist psychiatrist at the University of Stellenbosch. Amongst other postgraduate qualifications, he completed a master’s degree in Medical Law and Ethics.

Prior to moving to the UK, where he works as a medicolegal consultant at Medical Protection, Volker was in full-time private practice in South Africa, having previously worked in the public health sector.

His clinical interests include addictions, medical law and medical ethics. Together with a number of colleagues, he also founded the South African Addiction Medicine Society.
