The Department of Health has directed NHS Resolution to establish and administer the state-backed indemnity scheme for GPs in England, however details on how the scheme will operate are still to be confirmed.
Commenting, Simon Kayll, CEO at the Medical Protection Society, said:
“While a number of key decisions on the state-backed indemnity scheme are yet to be made, we welcome the progress on who will establish and administer the scheme.
“The detail on the cost and scope of the scheme, and how it will operate, must now be developed as soon as possible to give GPs in England some much needed certainty that the scheme is fair and meets their needs. We will continue to push the Government to ensure this happens swiftly, and share our expertise in the field as it explores all delivery options.
“We do know that the scheme will not include assistance with complaints, GMC inquiries, inquests, disciplinary proceedings or indemnity for non-NHS activity. MPS will continue to provide this support.”
