GMC commitment to eradicate disproportionate complaints welcomed

Commenting on the GMC’s target to eliminate disproportionate complaints and training inequalities, published today.

Dr Rob Hendry, Medical Director at Medical Protection, said:

“It is completely unacceptable that ethnic minority doctors are twice as likely to be referred by their employers to the GMC compared to white doctors, and that the referral rate for doctors qualifying outside of the UK is three times higher than that for UK doctors.

“There are multiple and complex causes behind this and there won’t be one solution to addressing this problem. We do however welcome the GMC’s commitment to address this head on and end the disproportionate number of referrals within five years. We will be monitoring progress in this area closely.”
