Dr Rob Hendry

Rob studied medicine at Dundee University, graduating in 1981. He was a partner in an urban teaching practice in Dundee for over 12 years.

He went on to complete an MPhil in Law and Ethics in Medicine at Glasgow University in 1992. This led to consultancy work for Medical Protection and part-time teaching at Dundee University. He took up a full-time appointment as a Medicolegal Adviser with the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland in 1996, and remained there until he moved to Medical Protection in 2009.

He is a Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine, has an interest in mediation, and has served on a number of governmental working parties looking at alternative approaches to dispute management.

Having completed his MBA at Strathclyde University Graduate Business School in 2001, he has continued to develop his business interests. In 2011, he was appointed Deputy Medical Director and in 2013 became Medical Director of Medical Protection, working with members around the world. He has a particular interest in supporting doctors who move between different countries and has championed Medical Protection’s Diversity and Inclusion strategy.

Dr Maiedha Raza

Communication skills tutor and general practitioner

Maiedha trained as a GP in the UK and appreciates how the training system can be improved to provide extra support for IMGs, especially with communication skills.

She has taught medical students and supervised junior doctors, Master’s students and other healthcare professionals, as well as working as a GP, and has used this experience to develop interactive, online courses.

Omar Alam

ST5 trainee in acute internal medicine at Hull Royal Infirmary

Omar moved to the UK in 2016 from Pakistan, and shares his experiences as an IMG on his blog omarsguidelines.blogspot and in the Facebook group facebook.com/groups/IMGs.in.the.UK

He also provides mentoring to IMGs, local UK graduates, and advanced care practitioners in his workplace. Omar is passionate about the wellbeing of health care professionals and patient safety.

Dr Pooja Arora

Chair, Arora Medical Education Limited

Pooja works with her husband, Dr Aman Arora, Founder and CEO of Arora Medical Education, to help doctors pass their Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB), Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA), and Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) exams.

She is also a GP with an interest in medicopolitics and has held various leadership roles nationally and locally for key stakeholder organisations like the British Medical Association (BMA), Health Education England (HEE), and Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP).

Dr Riaz Mappilakkandy

Dr Mappilakkandy has worked in the NHS for nearly 20 years. He originally trained as an ophthalmologist but currently works as an elderly care physician. He leads frailty & dementia services in his current NHS Trust and has a special interest in Parkinson’s Disease & movement disorders.

He has also spent 15 years supporting the training and education for all grades of doctors and medical students. He has a PG certificate in medical education, was a faculty member of the regional leadership programme and is a fellow of the higher education academy. He had lectured medical students at the University of Leicester and has experience training and mentoring overseas doctors. He has also taken the lead on overseas doctors training programmes for a number of NHS Trusts.

Dr Mappilakkandy is also the founder and Chair of the charity Extra Learning UK College (EXL-UK) which provides education and training with an emphasis on overseas doctors. He is currently a regional specialty advisor for medicine at RCPS Glasgow and an MRCP examiner and question writer.
