Medical Protection Society (MPS) - the world’s leading medical defence organisation which protects and supports the professional interests of more than 300,000 healthcare professionals - has announced the appointment of Dr Ed Morris FRCA as the Chair of its Medical Committee.

Ed qualified in medicine from University College London in 1992 and trained in anaesthesia in the UK and USA before becoming a consultant in Bristol in 2002. He works in both the NHS and in private practice, and has a particular interest in anaesthesia for orthopaedic and urological surgery, as well as medical imaging.

In addition to his clinical work, Ed has undertaken roles in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, medical school admissions, NHS service management, and representation of doctors within his Trust. Between 2016 and 2023 he was a tribunal member for the Medical Practitioners’ Tribunal Service – the independent fitness to practise arm of the UK’s General Medical Council.

His interest in medical regulation and good medical practice extends to professional sport and he is Medical Governance Advisor to the English Premier League.

Ed, who has served as a non-executive director of MPS since 2021, took up the position as Chair of its Medical Committee on 26 June 2025.

Dr Graham Stokes, Chair of MPS Council, said:

“We are privileged to have such a respected clinical leader take on the role as Chair of Medical Committee.

“As a Council member, Ed has been a strong voice for members. He has a wide range of expertise and insight into the issues facing the profession as well as policy areas spanning regulation and education, which will be invaluable as he takes on this new role.

“I would also like to pass on my thanks to Dr Fiona Cornish who has made an invaluable contribution over eight years as a non-executive director of MPS and as Chair of the Medical Committee.”

Dr Ed Morris, new Chair of the Medical Committee, said:

“A wide range of people across MPS work tirelessly to provide the best possible protection and support to members. The Medical Committee plays an important role in supporting MPS to continue this work by ensuring the organisation stays on top of issues facing the profession. I am very much looking forward to starting in this new role.”
