In response to recent member queries, we would like to provide further clarification regarding our position on circumcision procedures and related indemnity.
Medical Protection Society (MPS) supports the position of the World Health Organization in strongly opposing female genital mutilation (FGM), also referred to as female circumcision. FGM is internationally recognised as a violation of human rights and has no medical justification. It is illegal in many jurisdictions and is contrary to accepted ethical and professional standards of medical practice.
Accordingly, MPS does not provide indemnity for any matters arising from members intentionally performing, supporting, or encouraging FGM in any context.
Our indemnity provision for circumcision is strictly limited to male circumcision, provided it is carried out in line with applicable laws, regulations, and professional guidelines, and members have undertaken appropriate training.
To ensure clarity for our members, we have updated our rate sheets and renewal documents to reflect this position.
Question | Answer |
Can I undertake circumcision procedures? | Indemnity provision for circumcision procedures is limited to male circumcision. MPS does not provide indemnity for any matters arising from members intentionally performing, supporting, or encouraging FGM (female genital mutilation)/female circumcision in any context. If members are undertaking routine gynaecological practice, but allegations are made in relation to them performing FGM/female circumcision, then members should request assistance from MPS in the normal way. |
