MPS Foundation launches research competition for medical interns

02 August 2023

The Medical Protection Society (MPS) Foundation has announced a research competition for medical interns in Ireland, to improve patient safety, mitigate risk and enhance the wellbeing of healthcare professionals and the wider healthcare community.

The Medical Interns’ Research Competition (MIRC) aims to raise the profile of medical research in interns to generate interest and build research capability and capacity for the future.

Interns will choose to submit their competition entries under one of two categories:

  1. Quality improvement project which has application for patient safety and risk mitigation.
  2. Small-scale project on patient safety, mitigating risk or wellbeing of healthcare professionals.

Dr Gozie Offiah, MPS Council member, said: “This competition is the first of its kind, providing all medical interns in Ireland the opportunity to develop their understanding and expertise in the important areas of patient safety and risk reduction.

“The research experience provided by the MIRC will also serve as a launchpad for newly qualified doctors and open up career-advancing opportunities. Participants will be recognised, celebrated and rewarded for the excellence they demonstrate in the process and the contribution they make to the research knowledge base.”

Prizes will be awarded for the best competition entries, runners up and commended, from each of the six intern training networks across Ireland. Each intern network winner will receive €400 and a certificate. The runners up for each intern network will receive €200 and a certificate, and the commended will receive a certificate.

The interns network winners will compete for the overall national winner’s prize of an additional €400 and a certificate. Winners will be invited to have an article based on their winning entry published by the MPS Foundation for MPS members and the wider healthcare community. For a collaborative entry that wins, the contributors will share the prize money equally.

Pre-registration is now open and medical interns in Ireland can view the criteria for each competition category and register their interest via the competition portal on thempsfoundation.org. The open date for entry submission is 1 September 2023 and it will close on 12 April 2024.

The MPS Foundation is part of the Medical Protection Society – the world’s leading protection organisation – which currently supports more than 300,000 doctors, dentists and healthcare professionals, and has almost 130 years of global healthcare experience and expertise.
