In the event of further strike action, Dr Rob Hendry, Medical Director at Medical Protection said:

“Medical Protection recognises and respects the strength of feeling this issue has provoked amongst members. We encourage members taking part in industrial action to satisfy themselves that arrangements will be in place to care for patients, as per GMC guidance. The GMC’s Good Medical Practice does not prevent doctors from taking part in industrial action, but should they attract a complaint they must be prepared to justify the decisions they have made. Doctors who are not involved in the industrial action and are keen to support their colleagues by covering shifts should ensure they act within their expertise and seek support from senior colleagues, where necessary.

“Medical Protection can provide advice and support to members with ethical issues that may arise from their professional practice but they should contact their trade union to discuss queries relating to industrial action. If a member’s action results in a complaint to the GMC we encourage them to .

MPS is the world’s leading protection organisation for doctors, dentists and healthcare professionals. Membership provides access to expert advice and support together with the right to request indemnity for complaints or claims arising from professional practice, and as such of itself does not entitle a doctor to strike action. For further information you may want to contact your trade union."
