MULTI-DISCIPLINARY
TEAMS

Practice teams are growing and changing, with a greater mix of healthcare professionals potentially involved in patient care. To make it easier for you to arrange professional protection for the whole team, the healthcare professionals listed below can apply for associate membership as part of a Practice Xtra scheme.

  • Physiotherapists
  • Physician associates
  • Pharmacists
  • Paramedic practitioners
  • Focus care co-ordinators/primary care navigators

These members will be entitled to seek assistance from Medical Protection in respect to any claims for clinical negligence arising from their professional practice, and to access non-indemnity benefits including medicolegal advice and the right to request assistance with regulatory proceedings.

However, this excludes work undertaken outside the employing practice and work undertaken in an unscheduled care environment.

Members will be classed as working at one of three levels depending on the scope of work undertaken, and will pay a rate appropriate to their level of duties.

LEVELS OF DUTY
LEVEL 4 Members who undertake standard duties for the role (including initial triage working from a protocol where applicable) and do not undertake any of the activities described below.

LEVEL 6

Members who undertake any of the following in addition to standard or level 5 duties:

For information about subscription rates for associate members working at each level, please contact Member Services on 0800 561 9000.

We don’t provide individual membership for other staff employed by the practice, including:

  • healthcare assistants
  • phlebotomists
  • dispensers
  • administrative staff

This is because any act or omission made by these staff groups which gives rise to a complaint or claim is typically the responsibility of their employer under the principle of vicarious/extended liability, and provision for this is made within the membership arrangements we offer GP partners.
