The BMA has announced further industrial action in its ongoing dispute with the Department of Health over the proposed junior doctor contracts. The first ‘emergency care only’ action is to take place 6 – 8 April, with full withdrawal of labour on 26 and 27 April.
Medical Protection recognises and respects the strength of feeling this issue has provoked amongst members. We encourage members taking part in industrial action to satisfy themselves that arrangements will be in place to care for patients, as per
GMC guidance. The GMC’s
Good Medical Practice does not prevent doctors from taking part in industrial action, but should they attract a complaint they must be prepared to justify the decisions they have made.
The GMC states that doctors should take reasonable steps to satisfy themselves that arrangements are in place to care for their patients and should not disrupt the arrangements employers have made. A good handover is crucial; doctors have a responsibility for continuity and coordination of care, and for the safe transfer of patients between different teams. Doctors who are not involved and are working during industrial action should ensure they act within their expertise and seek support from senior colleagues, where necessary.
