Dr Riaz Jetha, a GP in a South Lewisham Group Practice, discusses strategic methods for recruiting and retaining healthcare professionals. Transcript Recruiting and retaining GPs is central to your organisation’s success particularly as you get larger and more complex. How do you go about recruiting and retaining them? Well, look, everybody advertising in Pulse and BMJ, we need to be a little bit more strategic than that. We need to be able to reach out to our local healthcare economy and that can come through being a training practice, through going to your local VTS and giving a talk about something educational, by having your nurses out there in their networks and making sure that your staff and your GPs and your practice manager are visible and flying the flag for your surgery locally. Ultimately, it’s your staff that will be your best mode to recruit newcomers and to actually keep them there when they arrive. I hope you can see what I’m saying is that we need to focus on developing a healthy, happy organisation and from that we need to make it visible so others are attracted to it and want to become part of it.
