How to find common goals when creating a new GP organisation

With GP Practices generally having different cultures and hierarchical structures, how would you suggest developing a model that factors these in and creates a culture that works?

Iain Murray, Managing Director of Allus Associates, explains the importance of finding a shared purpose to bring GP practices together.


When you bring together groups of GP practices into a new organisation, it’s really important that the practices get to know each other and to work out how they work, their own sets of values, what’s important to them and so on. A colleague recently said to me the most important way, probably the best way to do that, is to get them to go and play cricket on the beach which you can probably guess came from a colleague who’s based on the east coast. What’s really important is to focus on the commonalities between the organisations. In our experience, what we’ve found typically is that practices have far more in common than they think they do. They may think they’re very different, but the reality is they share the same challenges and the same problems and also potentially the same opportunities and it’s really key that organisations focus on those rather than the differences and it’s essentially about sharing a common enemy almost in terms of recognising the challenges they face but realising the ambition for the organisation and developing a shared purpose and a direction for the organisation. The differences in our experience can be parked – there are ways to do that – that’s not to ignore them but it’s to find ways of minimising their importance so the organisation can move forwards on a positive footing.
