With GP Practices generally having different cultures and hierarchical structures, how would you suggest developing a model that factors these in and creates a culture that works?

Graeme Cleland, Managing Director of Taurus Healthcare, discusses the role culture plays when forming new GP organisations.

Transcript

GP practices are all different. Some of them are quite patriarchal, some of them are quite matriarchal in the way that they’re configured and some of them are almost based around the principles of a commune. They’re all good, they’re all great. We tend to focus a lot on the things that divide primary care and actually instead what we should be is focussing on are the things that unite it. So there are some consistent messages within primary care so delivering the right quality, at the right cost, in the right place, at the right time, with the right clinical outcome are the things that actually come together behind primary care. So, creating a cultural change in a way that actually influences the future and changes things in an environment that hasn’t had to change for nearly 70 years, we’re 69 years at the NHS this year so moving to new models is going to be interesting. So, we’re working on models that develop perceptorship, training, mentorship and leadership to actually drive the right behaviours inside of primary care. Primary care traditionally creates models that suit itself locally and actually deliver the way in which they’re well used to delivering but creating a solid infrastructure behind primary care in a similar way to which secondary care operates. As we move into new models of care, we’ll create that bottom up way of transforming primary care to behave in a more collegiate systemic and organisational way.
