We have outlined how your membership will work alongside the new state-backed indemnity scheme below so you can see how each component protects you for all the types of work you do.

State-backed indemnity

The right to request indemnity for clinical negligence claims arising from work you carry out under an NHS primary services medical contract.

Professional Protection

This provides you with protection above and beyond the state-backed scheme. It means you can continue to:

 + Request advice and legal assistance from Medical Protection in relation to coroner's inquests, regulatory matters, disciplinary disputes and criminal investigations relating to professional practice.

 + Call the medicolegal advice line on 0800 952 0441 - available Mon-Fri 08.30-17.30, and 24/7 in an emergency on 0800 136 759.

 + Receive support for your career development with access to case reports, factsheets and journals.

 + Access CPD to develop your skills and help you manage your risk including workshops, online courses and webinars.

Claims Protection

The right to request indemnity for clinical negligence claims relating to private and fee-paying work which fall outside the scope of the state-backed scheme.

This could include activities such as medical report writing, insurance work and travel vaccinations.

How does state-backed indemnity affect my Medical Protection membership?

You may be eligible for a partial refund on your current subscription. Click here for futher details.

 + If all or the majority of your work is carried out under an NHS primary medical services contract, then you will pay a reduced subscription (compared to previous subscriptions) for Professional Protection and it will be tailored to the work you personally do and the risks you face.

 + You can add Claims Protection to your membership which provides you with the right to request indemnity for clinical negligence claims arising from any fee-paying or private work.
