Choose Claims Protection for your fee-paying and private work

If you do any fee-paying or private work, please make sure that you add on Claims Protection. This allows you to request indemnity for claims arising from any private and fee-paying work you do outside an NHS contract.

Fee-paying and private work

The list below details some common examples of fee-paying work:

  • Report writing
  • Passport forms
  • Insurance forms
  • Private prescriptions
  • Travel vaccinations and letters
  • HGV medicals
  • Taxi medicals
  • Cremation forms

Claims Protection goes above and beyond to help you

With Claims Protection you will have access to a dedicated team who will stay with you throughout your case and only act with your agreement. This may include:

  • A medicolegal consultant with experience in primary care
  • A claims manager with expertise in clinical negligence claims
  • A professional support team to manage your claim as efficiently as possible
  • A specialist solicitor for legal representation

Practice partners

All partners should add Claims Protection where private or fee-paying work is undertaken within the practice. Even if you do not personally carry out these activities this is important as a clinical negligence claim can still be made against the partnership from the work that your staff undertake. Your Claims Protection extends to your vicarious liability for staff members who are not required to hold individual indemnity.

Salaried GPs, nurses and AHPs

Claims Protection is necessary for salaried GPs and autonomous nurses and AHPs who carry out fee-paying activities even if you do not earn any income from this work. This will ensure you have adequate indemnity for claims arising from this work.

Voluntary work

To ensure you can obtain advice and support for all the work you undertake, you should add Claims Protection for the voluntary work you do.

Calculating your subscription

We base your subscription for Claims Protection on the income earned from any non-NHS work you undertake and the level of risk that these activities carry. You will need to have a Professional Protection membership in order to add Claims Protection.

Calculating your income from fee-paying and private work

When applying for Claims Protection, you will be asked to estimate the income you earn (within income bands) from fee-paying and private work.

This can be calculated as follows:

  • If you are a partner, reviewing your practice accounts for the last year and understanding the revenue amount that you personally receive for this type of work.
  • If you are a salaried GP, employed nurse or AHP, you may receive additional income from any fee-paying work you do at the practice. Referring to your tax return for the previous year may assist in estimating this income. If you do not receive any additional income from fee-paying work, you will still require Claims Protection and when asked to select an income band, select the lowest one (£0-£2,500).

Please remember we only need to know your personal income, not the practice’s income from this type of work.

Apply online today

To complete your application please allow 20 minutes and have the following to hand:

  • Your qualification details
  • Your GMC number
  • An estimate of your total income from fee-paying and private work
