Why Medical Protection goes #aboveandbeyond state-backed indemnity
With the new state-backed indemnity scheme due to come into effect in England and Wales in April 2019, it’s vital to understand why you still need protection from Medical Protection.
The state-backed scheme will only provide indemnity for clinical negligence claims arising from work undertaken under the NHS contracted primary medical services.
You will still need Medical Protection for other situations you may face:
• GMC proceedings
• Criminal investigations, related to professional practice
• Coroner’s Inquests
• Patient complaints
• Any private or fee-paying work you do
As our video series will demonstrate over the coming weeks, being subject to a complaint or investigation can be distressing and stressful. Medical Protection will continue to provide you with personal support, advice and representation for a whole range of medicolegal concerns, protecting your career and reputation even after the state-backed scheme launches.Just as importantly, our protection goes above and beyond defence, by helping you avoid claims arising in the first place.
“Interestingly, whilst a full-time GP can expect to receive two clinical negligence claims over a typical career, they can also expect to receive nine complaints or professional challenges during the same period.
Indeed, from October 2017 to September 2018, we helped a third of all our UK based GP members with over 6,000 cases that arose from their professional practice
The support we provided spanned matters including patient complaints, support for coroner inquests, disciplinary and regulatory matters and criminal and defamation cases. It is this vital protection that members will continue to need after state-backed indemnity is launched, to help safeguard their careers and reputations if they are professionally held to account."
We know that you will have questions, so we have included some Q&As to help provide you with more information.
