Presented by:

Dr Graham Howarth
MBChB, Dip Mid COG(SA), MMed (O&G), MPhil (Bioethics)
Head of Medical Services Africa

Dr Graham Howarth obtained an MBChB at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa in 1980. After rotations in surgery, anaesthetics and emergency medicine he worked for the South African Medical Research Council before completing an MMed (O&G).

He developed an interest in medical law and completed an MPhil in law and ethics in medicine at Glasgow University in 1992.

After becoming a specialist, he returned to academic medicine and joined the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Pretoria. While he was there his interest in medical ethics led to an MPhil (bioethics) and he stepped into the role of associate professor (ad hominem) in the department of obstetrics.

It was sixteen years ago that he became a medicolegal consultant at Medical Protection Society, in the UK, before taking on his current position.

Dr Vanessa Perrott
MBChB, MRCGP, MA (Linguistics)
Head of Education Development and Delivery

After qualifying from the University of Cape Town, Dr Perrott trained as a GP in the UK. She returned to pursue her research interest in doctor-patient communication, where she began a career in medical education. This led to a post as a non-operative gynaecologist in obstetrics and gynaecology at Groote Schuur.

Dr Perrott also worked as a presenter for Medical Protection running workshops in South Africa, before moving back to the UK to become Head of Education Development and Delivery. Now, she holds an honorary role as senior lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at UCT.
