Overview

How you communicate with a patient when something goes wrong is a big factor in determining if they make a complaint. Yet most doctors receive little or no formal training in how to communicate on what can be a difficult and stressful situation.

The two-hour Navigating Adverse Outcomes virtual workshop takes an in-depth look at communicating effectively with patients when adverse outcomes occur. It highlights the importance of recognising patient expectations, examines how failing to address these can increase the risk of a patient taking action, and equips you with techniques to help reduce the risk of complaints.

By attending this workshop you will:

  • Increase your knowledge of the research and perspectives regarding the patient and clinician experience of adverse outcomes
  • Examine personal attitudes that can affect a doctor’s response to an adverse outcome
  • Explore your basic ethical and legal obligations when discussing adverse outcomes with patients and their carers
  • Understand and be able to apply Medical Protection’s highly effective ‘ASSIST©’ model for handling adverse outcomes, enhancing your skills to communicate with patients when something has gone wrong
  • Reduce your risk of complaints or disciplinary action
