Even with guidance as well as specific legislation, there will be grey areas in the matter of consent to treatment of minors.

The maturity of the child concerned, the wishes and opinions of the parents/guardian, and the clinical circumstances all have to be taken into consideration and some of these may conflict. The overriding principle in such situations is that the child’s best interests take precedence, says Dr Graham Howarth.
