Director of Risk and Analysis

As Director of Risk and Analysis, Martin Burns is responsible for underwriting, subscription setting, reserving, reinsurance and analysing case trends. He also has overall responsibility for maintaining and developing the decision support systems.

Martin was educated at the University of Kent at Canterbury, where he obtained a BSc (Hons) degree.

Before joining MPS, Martin worked at Prudential Assurance Company Ltd (1988 – 1996) where he undertook various roles within actuarial departments before becoming a general insurance business analyst.

Director of Education

Dr Mark Dinwoodie
MA (Cantab) MB BS DGM DCH DRCOG DFSRH MMEd (Dundee) FRCGP

Having qualified from Cambridge University and Guy’s Hospital in 1987 and after undertaking GP vocational training, Mark worked as a GP Partner and Trainer in Bath until 2013. He also worked for a number of years as a clinical assistant in cardiology.

He has been involved in developing and delivering a wide variety of MPS risk management workshops and educational programmes since 2001.  He was a member of MPS Council and the MPS Claims Advisory Committee from 2005 to 2009.

He is a lead facilitator for the MPS Clinical Communication Programme and has particular interests in medication errors, the primary/secondary care interface and doctor-patient communication.  He is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners and has a Masters in Medical Education from the University of Dundee.

Director of Financial Reporting and Control

Ian is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants and holds an Association of Corporate Treasurers’ qualification in International Cash Management.

He completed his accountancy training shortly after joining MPS in 1994, since when he has held a number of different posts within the Finance Department. In 1999 he became Financial Controller and then Director of Financial Reporting and Control in 2015.

Ian has responsibility for leading the day to day activities, development and strategy of the Finance department, and providing input into various strategic and business change projects. He is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and also provides support and input to the MPI (London) Limited Board and MPS’s Audit and Risk Committee.

Director of Strategic Change

Peter started his career in 1992 with Commercial Union Plc, being trained in general insurance underwriting, business development and service operations as a graduate trainee.

Peter developed his career within financial services with senior leadership positions at Aviva, the Halifax and RBS leading operations and business transformation teams.

Peter is a graduate from the University of Birmingham, holds an MBA from the OU Business School and is a practitioner in Managing Successful Programmes. Peter joined MPS in 2012 and is responsible for leading strategic change.

Director of Member Operations

Peter studied for a BA (Hons) in Urban Planning at Leeds Polytechnic before moving on to the University of Wolverhampton where he obtained his Post Graduate Diploma in Management Studies.

 His career has primarily been within Financial Services (Building Society, Banking and Insurance Services), specialising in optimising best practice service delivery and the use of the emerging digital service options to enhance customer (member) experience. He has received a range of industry best practice awards and recognition for his achievements in this field.

Peter initially joined MPS as a Consultant in April 2013, managing the development and delivery of a revised Target Operating Model within Member Operations. Following the successful delivery of this Change Project, in July 2014, Peter was invited to join the Society in a permanent role to lead the continuing development and delivery of Operational Services to our Members and is now Director of Member Operations.

Director of Claims Policy and Technical

Emma obtained a law degree at the Polytechnic of Central London before studying for the Law Society Finals at the Guildford College of Law. 

She trained at a small city firm, Walker Martineau, and three years' post qualification, joined MPS panel firm, Le Brasseur J Tickle, now RadcliffesLeBrasseur, undertaking a mix of clinical negligence and regulatory work. In 1997 Emma came to work in-house at MPS in the Claims & Legal Services Division, focusing on high value claims. 

Emma has been the Claims & Legal Services Manager since 2005 and is now Director of Claims & Litigation. She has responsibility for the Claims & Legal Services function and also oversees claim handling for MPS Risk Solutions Limited. She also sits as Secretary to the Claims Advisory Committee.

Director of Claims Delivery

Melanie obtained a law Degree from Leeds University and studied for the Law Society finals at the College of Law in Chester.  She qualified as a Solicitor in 1985.  She was a member of both AvMA’s and the Law Society panel of approved clinical negligence practitioners.  She became an accredited Mediator in 2002.

She worked as a Clinical Negligence Solicitor and partner in private practice until 2006 when she joined MPS.  Melanie joined MPS in 2006, as a Team Leader, became Head of Claims Management in 2012.  In 2015, she was appointed Director of Claims Delivery in the Claims and Litigation Department.

Director of IT Operations

Jane obtained an English degree from London University. She moved into IT early on in her career and her experience includes technical expertise, leadership and management, industry know-how and strategy development. She has worked in a number of market sectors with global responsibility including FMCG, Pharmaceuticals, Food Processing Commodity, Wines and Spirits and Consultancy. 

Jane joined MPS in April 2013 as Head of IT and has been the Director of IT Operations since 2015. She has responsibility for end-to-end service covering a suite of Microsoft and Java technologies delivering coherent and consistent information technology capabilities, She has direct responsibility for Information Technology Strategy, IT Strategy, Enterprise Architecture, IT Governance and Information Technology Planning.

Medical Director

Robert was born and brought up in Glasgow and studied medicine at Dundee University. After graduating in 1981 he undertook a number of hospital appointments before becoming a partner in an urban teaching practice in Dundee in 1986.

He developed an interest in medical law and completed an MPhil in Law and Ethics in Medicine at Glasgow University in 1992.

Having done some consultancy work for the Medical Protection Society and having taught part-time at Dundee University, he took up a permanent appointment as a medicolegal adviser with the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland in 1996 and remained there until he moved to the Medical Protection Society to set up their Edinburgh office in 2009.

Robert is a Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine and continues to have an interest in teaching, having honorary positions at a number of universities.

Having completed his MBA at Strathclyde University Graduate Business School in 2001 he has continued to develop his business interests. In 2011 he was appointed Deputy Medical Director and in 2013 became Medical Director of the Medical Protection Society and is currently responsible for medicolegal services delivered by the Medical Protection Society to its members worldwide.

Director of Communications and Policy

Shelley McNicol graduated from the University of East Anglia in 1995 with a degree in history.

After leaving university ‎she was elected to the National Union of Students where she served two terms as National Treasurer. The role blended commercial responsibilities including a seat on the Board of Endsleigh Insurance and Chairman of NHS Services Ltd with representational and media activities. It was in this role that Shelley first served as a media spokesperson, appearing on Newsnight, BBC News and Sky News‎. 

From there Shelley held a number of PR and marketing roles including a marketing role at Proctor and Gamble before joining the PR and Public Affairs agency Morgan Allen Moore as a Director advising a ‎range of health care clients on their government relations and PR activity.

In 2002 Shelley joined MPS, initially as Head of PR and then Head of Communications. In 2014 Shelley was promoted to Director of Communications and Policy. In her time at MPS, Shelley has shaped the organisations interactions with governments and media around the world‎ and has provided reputational management advice to many members facing challenging and intrusive media coverage.

Dental Director

MBE BDS MFGDP(UK) PgDip MDE FFGDP(UK) FICD

Raj Rattan graduated from University College Hospital in London. After a short spell as an associate, he became a partner at a practice in Oxford going onto establishing additional practices in Bromley, Kent. 

He developed a portfolio career during which he provided consultancy and advisory services to the NHS, Corporate and Private sectors. He also served as a Policy Adviser at the Department of Health and has been heavily involved in postgraduate dental education for over 25 years, first as a Programme Director and more recently as Strategic Associate Dean in London. His professional publications include articles, textbooks and e-learning resources.  He has sat on a number of editorial boards over the years and has lectured extensively throughout the UK and overseas.

Raj has worked at Dental Protection for over 20 years on a part-time basis and, after over 30 years’ experience as a clinician and multiple-practice owner, he was appointed Dental Director at MPS in June 2016.
