Focussing on the preventative value of education in reducing the risks that arise from practice, Medical Protection’s second annual Balancing Risks and Challenges conference for consultants and senior doctors will be held at the Dublin Convention Centre on 23 July.
Over 150 participants will hear Guy Hirst, Former Chief Instructor at British Airways, present on human factors and system errors, and Professor James Lucey, Medical Director at St Patricks University Hospital, discuss the importance of looking after themselves. By the close of the conference, participants will have a better understanding of how to safely navigate their way around risk and protect their careers against complaints.
Dr Richard Brennan, GP, MPS Council Member and Former Chairman of the ICGP Council, will chair the conference, and Professor Freddie Wood, President of the IMC, will provide the keynote address.
Dr Pallavi Bradshaw, Senior Medicolegal Adviser at Medical Protection and speaker at the conference said:
“The ability for a clinician to understand and work through ethical issues in practice is as important as clinical acumen and can be the difference between a satisfied patient, and a dissatisfied one who makes a complaint or brings a claim. Balancing Risks and Challenges will assist consultants and senior doctors to identify and manage risk, and will cover topics such as dealing with difficult colleagues, adverse events, and keeping out of the press. It will also assist delegates to gain knowledge and skills to practise safely and ethically in the face of the increasing challenges of modern day practice.”
