Electives

Going on your elective is your first opportunity to really put into practice the knowledge and skills you’ve learned over the last few years.

In doing so you’re bound to come across circumstances and situations which are a medicolegal, as well as a clinical, challenge – MPS can offer you access to the best possible professional protection.

Why choose MPS for your elective?

While you are in the UK it is highly unlikely you will be subject to a claim for clinical negligence arising from your training. However, the situation may be very different in another country. As an MPS member, you have access to emergency telephone advice to help you through any medicolegal or ethical dilemmas you may encounter whilst you are away.

The institution hosting your visit may ask for evidence that you have some form of indemnity or malpractice cover. MPS can provide you with proof of your elective protection, usually within 24 hours of receiving your request.

MPS offers you free elective protection wherever you choose to travel for your elective, including local membership schemes in South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong and the Caribbean.

We also provide students with a wide range of useful elective resources that you will find invaluable in planning yor elective.

Electives in Australia

The Australian Government introduced new medical indemnity legislation on 1 July 2003, stipulating that all health care practitioners (including students) must be covered by an insurance contract provided by a regulated insurer.

As MPS is not an insurance company, we have made arrangements with MIPS (Medical Indemnity Protection Society) to cover all UK students who wish to take their elective in Australia.

Please call the Student Membership Helpline on 0845 900 0022 to ensure you have the correct elective protection in place.
