DH consultation on fitness to practise adjudication for health professionals

07 Oct 2010

MPS welcomes the opportunity to comment on the Department of Health’s consultation on fitness to practise adjudication for health professionals. We have reservations about the ability of the General Medical Council (GMC) to enhance the independence of adjudication and modernise its existing processes.

We are reminded of the reasons leading to the creation of the Office of the Health Professions Adjudicator (OHPA) following Dame Janet Smith’s reports on the Shipman Inquiry. We are disappointed that the recommendations in relation to independence and modernisation of process have not yet been implemented. This is covered in more detail in our responses to the consultation questions in the attachment on the right.
