Vol. 3 no. 1, 2010

New Doctor

Casualty and ER are popular TV shows, but is emergency medicine really like that? In this edition we hear from doctors who work in the specialty and learn how the area has grown over recent years.

Another aspect of medicine that is often viewed as mysterious is that of research, Dr James Bateman gives us tips on getting your foot in the door.

Handovers, to me an extremely important and valuable part of everyday work, are all too often skimmed over, and for years not given the priority they deserve. Dr Ken Catchpole identifies what lessons doctors can learn from civil aviation and the Ferrari Formula 1 team, to highlight the critical importance of a good handover.

Clearly it’s important that we all have a life outside of work, and in particular, strong support networks to help through those stressful moments, but be cautious. Our advice is to ensure you maintain boundaries between your professional and social life. Do you feel confident that your behaviour on social networking sites would not be perceived to bring the profession into disrepute? Sara Williams looks at the growth of social networking sites and highlights the risks.

I hope you enjoy this edition and don’t forget to complete our wordsearch, there’s a PS3 up for grabs.
