GMC consults on medical trainers: Have your say

17 Jan 2012

The General Medical Council (GMC) has issued a consultation on proposed new arrangements for the recognition and approval of medical trainers.

GP trainers are already approved by the GMC but the new proposals are designed to improve the quality and consistency of medical training across the UK.

The proposals relate to:

  • Named educational supervisors in postgraduate training
  • Named clinical supervisors in postgraduate training
  • Lead coordinators of undergraduate training at each local education provider
  • Doctors responsible for overseeing students’ educational progress for each medical school.

The GMC’s existing standards are structured into seven areas. Local education providers such as hospitals and general practices would use the seven areas to show how they identify, train and appraise these trainers. Postgraduate deaneries and medical schools would then use that information to show the GMC what local arrangements they have in place to maintain standards.

You can take part in the online consultation via the GMC website. The closing date for comments is 30 March 2012.
