DH launches new policy framework for training and workforce planning
23 Jan 2012
The Department of Health (DH) has published Liberating the NHS: Developing the Healthcare Workforce, its policy framework for a new approach to workforce planning and the education and training of the health workforce.
The driving principle for reforming the education and training system is to improve care and outcomes for patients.
The new system will be governed by two central bodies – Health Education England and Local Education and Training Boards.
Health Education England (HEE) will provide national leadership and oversight on strategic planning and development of the health and public health workforce, and allocate education and training resources.
The Local Education and Training Boards (LETB) will be the vehicle for providers and professionals to work with HEE to improve the quality of education and training outcomes so that they meet the needs of service providers, patients and the public. LETBs may also take on specific leadership roles for particular professional groups, such as the smaller professions and for commissioning specialist skills.
