Indemnity arrangements for nurses

It is a legal requirement for practising nurses to have an appropriate insurance or indemnity arrangement in place in order to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Nurses will be asked to provide evidence of this as part of the revalidation process, which is being introduced from April 2016.

We want to assist employers and nurses who need to check their indemnity arrangements by reminding you of our approach to nurse membership.

Please see our Nurse indemnity FAQs for information about:

  • Who in your practice requires an individual indemnity arrangement
  • The number of free nurse memberships you are entitled to with a Practice Xtra group scheme
  • The benefits and limitations of free and paid nurse membership

Action points for nurses and employers:

  • Read the FAQs and if you have any queries about nurse membership contact Member Services by calling 0800 952 0441.
  • If you need a replacement membership certificate you can print this yourself by logging on to our secure member area (you will need your Medical Protection membership number).
  • We recommend that nurses who have free indemnity-only membership through Practice Xtra should consider also holding membership with the RCN, or an appropriate union, in case they need to request assistance with matters outside the scope of their Medical Protection membership (e.g. disciplinary and regulatory issues).
