Understanding Human Error in General Practice
Eight out of ten accidents in safety-critical industries are caused by human error (Helmreich, 2000; Reason, 1990); general practice is no exception.
Due to the complexity of the healthcare environment, all general practices are vulnerable to making mistakes that could put the safety of their patients at risk. Research indicates that no matter how technically gifted or professional GPs are, there is no immunity from human error.
This workshop will help you to reduce your risk of complaints and claims by understanding the importance of the human element of error and how effective teamwork can improve patient outcomes.
By attending this workshop you will:
- understand what is meant by the term ‘human factors’
- be aware of error-provoking situations facing general practices every day - and learn how to tackle them
- understand how the impact of the human factor can improve patient outcomes
- be aware of when we, as humans, are most vulnerable to 'getting it wrong' - and how to rectify this
- learn from examples of best practice in other safety-critical industries
- gain practical tips and tools to enhance practice safety.
On completion of this workshop you will be presented with a certificate of attendance, including space for you to record your reflective learning.
Please note: If you have already attended MPS’s Safer Clinical Practice workshop, you may find that you have already covered sections of the Understanding Human Error workshop.
