Misrepresentation on television
An edition of the BBC programme Panorama criticised the approach and methods of an MPS member, a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
Following the broadcast, we helped the doctor to complain to the Broadcasting Standards Commission about a number of issues. These included conducting a survey of patients whose views were not representative, misrepresenting the doctor’s beliefs, a misleading dramatic reconstruction and misrepresenting the contents of a lecture.
The Commission upheld a number of complaints and concluded its report by stating that it regarded the matters that were upheld as being of particular importance as they concerned the doctor’s professional reputation. Accordingly, overall, the complaint was upheld.
