MPS Ethical Code of Conduct

Chair of MPS Council, Dr Nicholas Davies, discusses the Ethical Code of Conduct that MPS and its employees agree to abide by

MPS is a mutual organisation, owned by its members. Based in the UK we have members in more than 40 countries around the world. As such, we are not only the custodians of our members’ subscriptions to ensure that future claims will be met but we also represent their collective voice. Our behaviour will reflect on our members and we therefore strive to act in ways of which our members will approve.

MPS is committed to carrying out its business in a fair, open and honest manner and in full compliance with its legal obligations. MPS also seeks to be an ethical company and to act legally, consistently and fairly.

We recognise that everyone at MPS is responsible, both individually and collectively, for maintaining high standards of legal and ethical business conduct within MPS.

MPS’s Council has created an Ethical Conduct Committee and tasked it to:

  1. We are not only the custodians of our members’ subscriptions to ensure that future claims will be met but we also represent their collective voice

Maintain MPS’s Ethical Code of Conduct to ensure that it reflects the current legal and ethical requirements of MPS employees and contractors.
  2. Implement the Ethical Code of Conduct and communicate it to all employees and contractors.
  3. Approve, monitor, review, maintain and communicate MPS’s anti-bribery and corruption policies and procedures.
  4. Provide guidance and direction in relation to legal and ethical issues arising under the Ethical Code of Conduct.
  5. Provide a forum to which unethical or unlawful behaviour can be reported.
  6. Monitor compliance with the Ethical Code of Conduct.

The Ethical Code of Conduct provides guidance to staff on ethical and legal issues based around our core ethical principles.

Loyalty and diligence

Everyone at MPS is responsible, both individually and collectively, for maintaining high standards of legal and ethical business conduct within MPS

Employees, directors and council members, whenever involved in MPS business, are expected to put the interests of MPS ahead of their own personal interests. All business conducted on behalf of MPS should be performed in a diligent and loyal manner. To do this, we encourage our employees and contractors to avoid conflicts and outside interests in potential conflict with those of MPS and, where any such conflicts arise, we have processes in place by which these should be declared and considered by the Ethical Conduct Committee.

Transparency of activities

We are committed to conducting our business in a straightforward, honest and open manner. All employees, directors and council members are expected to adhere to this requirement.

Compliance with the law

We are committed to conducting our business in compliance with the laws and legal requirements in each of the jurisdictions in which we operate.

Zero tolerance for fraudulent or corrupt business practices including bribery

All employees must adhere to the highest levels of honesty, integrity and ethics at all times when conducting business on behalf of MPS. MPS will not tolerate any kind of fraudulent or corrupt business practice including bribery.

All employees must adhere to the highest levels of honesty, integrity and ethics at all times

In addition to the serious criminal sanctions which could be imposed on MPS and the damage to its reputation and that of its members, MPS recognises and abhors the socioeconomic damage that results from such practices.

We will usually pursue all appropriate legal remedies against employees or outside parties involved in fraudulent or corrupt business practices including bribery. Employees who commit such acts will, subject to our compliance with employment laws, be dismissed. We will not conduct business with third parties who operate in a fraudulent or corrupt manner.

Respect for human dignity

We are committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment free from discrimination, harassment, violence and the impact of alcohol or illegal drugs.

Fair competition

MPS supports free and fair competition and strives to deal with all parties fairly and equitably. MPS will not make untrue or misleading statements about competitors.
