Gauteng hospitals owed R1.6bn

Hospitals in Gauteng are owed R1.6 billion, the Gauteng Department of Health has announced.

Some of the debtors include:

• Medical aids and other funders, who owe R168 million
• Other government departments and provinces, who owe various amounts ranging from R4.4m to R672m.

The health spokesperson for the Democratic Alliance in Gauteng slammed the R168m owed by medical aids as a "scandal".

He also said the Gauteng Department of Health is working on collecting the outstanding payments, but progress so far has been slow.
