SA rejects new developments in adult male circumcision

02 Aug 2011

The South African health department has released a statement to say it will not be supporting a new circumcision device, following new investigations by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Trials have been conducted for three new devices that WHO hopes will cut down the cost and labour involved in performing circumcisions in adult males.

However, the South African government has rejected the use of one device being tested – known as the Tara KLamp – following adverse events being reported by 37% of men involved in the trial. The Treatment Action Campaign and researchers involved in the original trial have also condemned the use of the device due to the risks for patient safety.

According to reports, WHO is not planning to conduct any further clinical studies of the Tara KLamp.

The news comes as Health and Social Development MEC, Ntombi Mekgwe, calls for traditional leaders and health professionals to work together to improve the safety of performing circumcisions in Pretoria.
