GetMed scheme deregistered
10 Nov 2011
The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) has deregistered GetMed, a medical scheme that failed to meet the requirements as laid out in the Medical Schemes Act.
The CMS revealed that GetMed launched an unregistered health protection plan in 2009. The scheme offered around 2,500 patients healthcare services at a competitive rate, and later became conditionally registered with the CMS.
The council ruled that before GetMed could be fully registered, it must agree:
- to provide a financial guarantee
- to pay the application fees for the accreditation of the administration and managed care organisations
- to provide further documentation to the registrar’s accreditation unit
- to provide a reinsurance contract for evaluation by the registrar.
The company failed to meet these terms, which led the CMS to the decision to deregister it.
The CMS now urges all 2,500 patients previously registered with GetMed to urgently seek advice on their medical cover.
