Increase in Pacific scholarships

10 May 2011

More Pacific students are being awarded scholarships in health studies, a recent report has shown.

Over 200 scholarships were awarded in the academic year 2010-11, compared to just 24 in 2007. Over half of the scholarships awarded this year were for students pursuing a career in medicine, and another quarter were given to student nurses.

The Minister of Health Clinical Director Pacific Health, Dr Api Talemaitoga, says, “The community regards the awards as vital for improving Pacific health outcomes by ensuring we have a strong Pacific health workforce” and describes the scholarships as “a crucial link” in the healthcare system.
