About MPS
The Medical Protection Society (MPS) is New Zealand’s leading provider of discretionary professional indemnity and expert advice for healthcare professionals. MPS membership offers peace of mind to more than 15,000 health professionals in New Zealand and over 260,000 members worldwide.
As a not-for-profit mutual organisation, MPS offers support to members with the legal and ethical problems that arise from their professional practice. This includes, but is not limited to, assistance with inquiries by the Health and Disability Commissioner, Privacy Commissioner, Human Rights Commissioner, Medical Council and other relevant authorities, as well as help with inquests and legal and ethical dilemmas.
Members have access to expert advice from a team of medicolegal consultants based in New Zealand and, where appropriate, legal assistance from a team of experienced lawyers.
Fairness is at the heart of how we conduct our business. We actively protect and promote the interests of members and the wider profession. We promote safer practice by running risk management and education programmes to reduce avoidable harm.
MPS is not an insurance company. The benefits of membership are discretionary – this allows us the flexibility to provide help and support even in unusual circumstances.
