Medicolegal Advice

The Medical Protection Society offers medico-legal advice on the legal problems that arise from clinical practice.

Medicolegal Advice Line

Every year MPS receives more than 20,000 calls from members wanting medicolegal advice. As experts in the medicolegal field, we welcome these calls, as we realise that early medicolegal advice on a specific problem can help avoid difficulties later on. We encourage all members to get in touch if they have any doubt over a legal issue.

Medicolegal Advisers

MPS medicolegal advisers are doctors with legal training, allowing them to fully appreciate the practical problems faced by medical professionals on an everyday basis, not to mention the legal implications these can raise. MPS medicolegal advisers are able to give advice on complicated issues and are able to suggest the best way forward on complex issues that often do not have right or wrong answers.

Where an adverse incident has already occurred and a complaint or claim is pending, they can give expert medicolegal advice to the member on the next steps that need to be taken.

Visit the help and advice section of the site to find out how to contact a medicolegal adviser.

Medicolegal Information

As well as providing answers to specific queries, MPS uses experience and expertise accumulated over many years to publish a large amount of medicolegal advice, much of which is available on the MPS website.

Medicolegal Booklets

Our medicolegal booklets provide in-depth information on particular issues, including consent and medical records. They act as a useful resource for doctors at any stage in their career, reminding of the principles of good practice. The booklets are designed to help avoid unwanted problems and whist they may not answer the more complex problems you may face, they act as a useful supplement to the support offered by our medicolegal advice line.

Medical News

The MPS journal Casebook and the MPS website provide the latest medical news and developments affecting the legal issues of clinical practice. Our aim is to keep you up-to-date with the latest medical details, enabling you to maintain the good practice of your profession.
