The Medical Protection Society (MPS) is pleased to announce the appointment of two Medicolegal Consultants based in Ireland - Dr Niamh Long and Dr Alex Reid. They will be a welcome addition to the team of medicolegal advisers in Leeds, who currently manage the majority of MPS cases in Ireland.
Alex and Niamh will be the first MPS Medicolegal Consultants to be based in Ireland and will be working to complement the existing Leeds team in continuing to provide high quality telephone advice, written advice and assistance across the full spectrum of the benefits of membership of MPS.
Dr John Hickey, outgoing Chief Executive said: “MPS has had members in Ireland for over a century. I am very pleased that Niamh and Alex will be joining the team. Their appointment reinforces our commitment to Ireland and our desire not only to maintain, but to improve, the existing high standards of service for Irish members.”
Dr Niamh Long has been in the health profession for over ten years, she has extensive experience of hospital paediatrics and latterly primary care. She continues to work as a locum GP in the Cork area and is a part-time clinical tutor in Child Health in University College Cork.
Previous to this Niamh worked in a busy Cork city centre practice, where her interests were women's health, child health promotion and medical education.
Niamh said of her appointment: “My special interests have always included the medicolegal aspects of medical practice. My diverse experience places me in a strong position to assist doctors, and indirectly patients. I look forward to working with a talented and dedicated team.”
Dr Alex Reid graduated from University College Dublin in 1990 and is presently working at Tallaght Hospital in Dublin as a Specialist in Occupational Medicine.
Alex said of his appointment: “The legal and ethical challenges that face doctors are many and varied - MPS advisers are recognised experts in this field. I am excited to be one of the first consultants based in Ireland and I look forward to continue providing the best service to our members and giving them the support they need.”
Alex has broad experience in the hospital sector and general practice both in Ireland and internationally, and has worked in both the public and private sectors.
