New Chief Executive for MPS

The Medical Protection Society (MPS) today announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive. Tony Mason, formerly Managing Director and now Chairman of the actuarial firm, Lane Clark and Peacock (LCP), has been appointed and will take up the post later this year succeeding the current Chief Executive, Dr John Hickey.

Announcing the appointment, Dr Nick Davies, Chairman of MPS said,

“We are delighted that we have been able to recruit someone of Tony’s calibre. Not only is he a very experienced manager but he also has unrivalled experience in the professional indemnity field.” 

John Hickey said,

“Tony is a world class actuary and has over 20 years’ association with MPS. He has a deep understanding of MPS and our objective of maintaining our position as the first choice provider of professional advice and indemnity to doctors and dentists worldwide. I am confident that he will build on the successes of MPS in recent years.’

Notes to editors

  1. Tony Mason is an actuary.  He joined LCP in 1980 and become a partner in 1985.  Tony was appointed as Managing Director in 1997 and as Chairman in 2006. As well as overseeing all business activities he is also involved in client work.  He specialises in all matters concerning professional indemnity arising from clinical negligence – a subject on which he has spoken regularly at conferences and seminars around the world. Tony has been the lead partner at LCP in providing actuarial services to MPS for many years.  A photograph is attached.
  2. Applications for the position of Chief Executive were sought in autumn 2006 after John Hickey, MPS’s current Chief Executive, announced his intention to retire in 2007. The appointment process was conducted by the nominations committee of MPS.
  3. The details of when Tony Mason will take over the role of Chief Executive are still being finalised but it is anticipated that he will take over full time in the last quarter of 2007.
