Migraine concerns over light bulbs

18 February 2008

Energy-saving light bulbs are at the centre of health concerns, after two Irish organisations linked them with epilepsy and migraines, reports Medicine Weekly.

"Green" light bulbs, which will be compulsory next year, are said to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and cut electricity bills.

However, many of the bulbs use fluorescent technology that has reportedly caused an occasional "flickering" effect, which hundreds of UK patients have claimed has caused migraine attacks.

Both the Migraine Association of Ireland and Brainwave - an epilepsy organisation - have expressed fears over potential health risks.
