Volume 1 Issue 1

Welcome

Welcome to the first edition of New Doctor, a publication specifically for junior doctors in Ireland.

This follows on from the success of our UK New Doctor, and Junior Doctor, a magazine for junior doctors in South Africa. We want to give each edition as regional a flavour as possible.

In this issue, we look at working abroad and MPS as an international organisation; particularly important given that a considerable number of junior doctors in Ireland spend some time working overseas.

As a Medicolegal Adviser, I often take queries from the MPS member helpline, where doctors ring with a specific query or concern and ask for our advice.

Some members might have received a complaint and need to know what to do next. Others just want to check their intended course of action is the right one. We welcome these calls as it’s easier to talk things through with us rather than hedging your bets – which might leave you open to a complaint or a claim, should something go wrong.

MPS Medicolegal Consultant Dr Alex Reid answers some of the most common member queries in our “Dilemmas” section.

I hope you enjoy this edition and you find it informative and useful. We’d be very interested to hear your comments and ideas.

Dr George Fernie – Editor-in-chief
MPS Senior Medicolegal Adviser
