Training schemes for non-Specialist Register GPs

22 Jun 2009

The Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) is considering the potential to set up training schemes for GPs who are not currently eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register.

In February this year, all GPs who began working after 31 December 1994 that are not qualified to apply for a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Training (acquired rights) – or who are not eligible for inclusion on the Register of Medical Specialists (general practice division) – were asked to notify the ICGP.

The ICGP is now collating details from respondents, and is planning to develop alternative training or assessment models to qualify more doctors for inclusion on the Specialist Register. The ICGP states it is essential to identify doctors who are not currently on the Specialist Register in order to gauge how many would be interested in taking part in the proposed training scheme.

The conclusions of the survey are expected later this year.
