Hospital safety data unmonitored

Adverse incident rates in hospitals are going undetected as neither the DH nor the Health Service Executive (HSE), are monitoring statistics.

Fine Gael (FG) raised the issue after it discovered that the health authorities do not have access to comparative hospital data that would indicate areas where improvement is needed.

FG also revealed that error rates, including data to show that unnecessary operations are being performed, are also not being collected and monitored by the HSE or DH. This indicates that hospitals have no national standards to work towards, and cannot be regulated properly by the health authorities.
