Demand for more GP training in Ireland

21 December 2009

More GPs are needed in Ireland, according to a report issued by the Competition Authority.

The report found that there are currently around 2,800 GPs in Ireland – about two thirds of the number of GPs in most other European countries.

It says that Ireland needs to increase the number of people going into the profession, either through enrolling students at medical school, or by encouraging existing doctors to re-train as GPs.

The report goes on to suggest that doctors who are retraining as GPs should be allowed to enter a “fast-tracked” training scheme, lasting two years rather than four; if they possess any hospital experience.

Last year’s budget restrictions meant that the HSE put plans to increase GP training on hold.
