Medical Council decides on recognition of new medical specialties

15 Nov 2011

The Medical Council recently finished a programme of consultation in relation to applications from two further medical disciplines for recognition as medical specialties under the Medical Practitioners Act 2007.

Applications from Intensive Care Medicine and Neonatology were submitted, with the Medical Council seeking feedback from interested parties by Friday 11 December 2011.

The Medical Council is the statutory authority responsible for determining the medical disciplines that meet the required standards for recognition as a specialty in Ireland. Fifty-two specialties are currently recognised.

Professor Kieran Murphy, President of the Medical Council said: "All feedback relating to this recognition process will be fully considered before Council makes its final decision."
